The racetrack was built on an area of about 170 ha in 1972 , on the initiative of the Automobile Club of Florence. The task of designing the new track and related works was assigned to Eng. Gianfranco Agnoletto. The plant on the track so it was inaugurated in 1974 .In 1988 the circuit was bought by Ferrari , which initiated a profound work of restructuring the system, providing it with the best existing infrastructure and updating them continuously, while keeping unchanged the design of the track, very demanding for the pilots.
The circuit of the racetrack is characterized by a straight uphill 1141 m long, where the 990 cm³ MotoGP bikes reached a speed of about 340 km / h (the record was set in 2019 by Andrea Dovizioso on Ducati Desmosedici GP19 with 356.7 km / h ), severe gradient changes and very fast, blind and challenging curves, such as "Arrabbiata 1" and "Arrabbiata 2". Also note the Casanova-Savelli, a downhill left-right chicane, important for lap time. Another fundamental point is the "San Donato" curve, the first of the track (located at the end of the aforementioned straight), where it is important to brake as late as possible.
The racetrack has won the award for the best world motorcycle circuit five times (Best Grand Prix, 1995-1996-1997-2000-2011).
